Pattern post

Size does matter

Hi everyone. This is your sewing up and border knitter here !

Just want to clarify a few things before we embark on the next baby blanket.
1. Size does matter.
The squares need to be 11 by 11 cms and depending on the pattern you have chosen you will need to cast on about 30 stitches. To get this knit on 9 (3.75) or 10 ( 3.25 or 3.5) needles, whatever suits you to get the size. Check how it is working out when you are about 10 cms into the pattern by smoothing the work out gently along an upholstered chair arm. Pull it out if it isn't close to 11 cms in width and change the size of your needles to make it bigger or smaller.

2. No of stitches to cast on for each pattern.
Leave at least 30 cm tails at the beginning and the end of each square.
If the pattern asks for multiples of 8+1 then cast on 33 stitches. If it asks for multiples of 5+2 then cast on 32 stitches. If it asks for multiples of 2 cast on 30 stitches. So the point is that the square must have about 30 stitches. If because you find your square is far too narrow use a bigger needle or even add another pattern if your pattern lets you do so by adding a few stitches. Wider patterns will be too wide.

3. Casting off.
Please use the slip one, knit one, pass first stitch over second stitch so you have one stitch on your right needle. Then continue to cast off by knitting next stitch and pulling the first stitch over to cast off. This method of casting off  is nice and firm to sew up. Try to keep the square square if that makes sense by not making the casting off too loose or too tight. Leave a good tail.

Patterns will follow in the next post.

Back to Project Sofia

 A present for Sofia

 A lovely surprise!

And baby soft!

 All very pleased!

The baby balls have been rolled

Yvonne reports the completion of the ball rolling part of the operation.  We hope they will be available at coffee on Thursday this week.  Julie has made a request that knitters measure their squares to a particular scale so they are all the same when completed, but I will get Julie to specify.

To the ladies who will be off on their travels - don't worry, we'll save you some!
